INTRODUCTION:
The players are young, fanatically loyal Lunars sent to solve crimes and keep the native Sartarites under control. The idea is to establish close contact and good relations with the Colymar Tribe and show them the rightness of the Pax Lunara. The old "hearts and minds" mission.
THE ADVENTURE:
Incidius, the Lunar Tax collector and his escort of 8 lunar soldiers have turned up dead and the party is sent to investigate. The corpses were discovered on the road between Runegate and Swan bu a lunar patrol. The patrol clumsily buries the corpses in shallow graves, and brings back the livestock and armor left at the scene.
Clues at the scene:
1) the soldiers were killed quickly and without much resistance. wounds indicated a curved weapon.
2) threads of faded red wool are found at the perp's apparent campsite, along with a scrap of beef jerky.
Pvt. Rockfrug picked up the assailant's trail leading away from the scene. He and Vanevar ended up following the trail until it crossed the road connecting Swan, a small town and Tarkolar, the Colymar Fort. At that point it was impossible to determine which way the bad guys went, so the two rejoined the party at Swan.
Meanwhile, the tax collector's corpse had been sent back to Runegate for Resurrection, which would take some time. the body was left with the healers and the main party went on to Swan. In town, the party looks for suspects and cant find any suspicious locals. Staying at the Lunar house are 2 Lunars: Captain Kosovo and Sir Restus. Kosovo is a Lunar Officer and the cousin of one of the NPC/replacement detectives. He doesn't seem suspicious. Restus, on the other hand, does. He is a minor Lunar Noble and trader who claims to recently have won a lot of money gambling in Boldhome. Observing Restus loosing against Kosovo, the gambling story seems ulikely.
Taking the initiative, Tavar the Tarshite sneakly searches the saddlebags of the suspicious noble. He is kind of caught in the act, but manages to discover a partially melted silver necklace that could have been the Tax Collector's badge of Office. So as not to arouse the Noble's suspicion, Tavar and Vanevar let Restus and his portly manservant seem to escape, but are sure to note their destination.
Meanwhile, Yasna has arranged with the local Lhankor Mhy Sage to have Reconstruction cast on Investigator Sir Ahmet. Unfortunately, the party rolls poorly and is only albe to view the perpetrators riding off after the crime. However, Ahmet gets a good view of the backs of the bad guys, especially the portly one.
After a rezvendous at Swan and some logistical arrangements with horses, the full party sets off in pursuit of the suspects. Eventually Restus and his man are cornered at an inn in Manville. They try to put up a fight, but Restus' leg is quickly severed with a slash by Pvt. Vanevar. The suspects were questioned by Ahment and inexpertly tortured by Tavar but neither would break. Finally, seeing that he was going to get strung up, the portly manservant sold out his master. It turns out that Sir Restus was running low on funds and resorted to petty thuggery. He didn't count on the competent investigative skills of the new Lunar Constabulary.
Figuring out his number was up, Restus tried to bribe Sir Ahmet, but was soundlly rebuffed. it'll take a lot more than a few hundred silvers to corrupt the loyal investigator and his comrades. in the end, Sir Restus was hanged and the body burned to prevent mischief. case closed.
