The mission began when a Lunar patrol came back and reported that the local Lunar tax collector, a certain Incidius, was found murdered near the road between Runegage and Swan. The Lunar constabulary was called in and took a report.

The Lunar patrol was headed by a Corporal Ralston. He said he discovered Incidius and his eight bodyguards murdered in a field. On discovering the bodies, the Corporal ordered their armor removed and the bodies buried. After further questioning, the corporal stated that this was done at the suggestion of a certain Private Stupidius. The armor was then loaded onto a number of miscellaneous domestic animals that were found in the vicinity, probably part of the taxes that were collected, and returned to Runegate. The Corporal claimed that there was no money found on any of the bodies despite statements by various patrol members that some of the deceased guards had recently won large sums gambling. It was also mentioned that some of the decesed had not even drawn their weapons before their deaths.

While in Runegate, Det. Yasna determined that no unusually large sums of money had recently appeared, and Inspector Doblian put the entire garrison on report for extreme ineptitude and corruption.

The Constables then left for the scene of the crime. The scene was badly disturbed and very little information could be gathered from there. The cash box was broken into and all of the money was missing. Inspector Ahmet disinterred the bodies and it was determined that the tax collector's identity plaque was also missing. A few fibers of faded red wool were also found. The bodies appeared to be killed by a blade, possibly curved.

Det.s Kaleel and Yasna went to the top of a rise and discovered a campsite that was occupied at about the time of the murder. Tracks were found that showed two horses leaving the campsite in the directon of the site of the murder. Det.s Zephyr and Rockfrug found tracks of three horses heading away from the murder scene towards the north.

The bodies were returned to Runegate for resurrection and the investigation moved to Swan. Three Lunars were found staying at the Inn in Swan, Captain Kosovo, a Carmanian Knight called Sir Restus, and his portly manservant.

The local Lhankor Mhy was contacted by Det. Yasna and convinced to provide a reconstruction and mind-link.

Inspectors Ahmet and Doblian and Corporal Tracius returned to Runegate to interview Incidius. Incidius said that they had stopped at the side of the road for a break when two Lunars came and spoke with the guards. These Lunars suddenly slaughtered the guards and Incidius.

In Swan Det. Tavar examied the contents of Sir Restus' packs and found a melted piece of silver on a chain that could have been the tax collector's credentials. This act was noticed by the manservant.

The Inspectors returned to the scene of the crime with Incidius. They then went to a local homestead and questioned the inhabitants. The locals claimed to have witnessed the whole scene. They claimed it happened at about 2pm. The tax collector stopped at the side of the road for a rest when two Lunars rode out of the woods. The they spoke for some time and then the locals suddenly noticed that the tax collector and guards were dead and the two Lunars were missing.

Det. Yasna arrived at the scene with the Lhankor Mhy, and a reconstruction was cast, but was a little too late. All that was seen was the backs of the two assailants leading the tax collector's horse away.

The group returned to Swan and discovered that Sir Restus and Captain Kosovo had already left town. They followed Sir Restus to Manville where Sir Restus resisted arrest. Sir Restus' leg was amputated by Det. Zephyr.

Sir Restus and his manservant were returned to Runegate where they were identified by Incidius. The manservant was convinced to describe their actions and was revealed. Sir Restus was discovered to be an alias, and his real name was ????. Sir ???? was summarily executed. Case closed.

Several days later, his manservant was found dead in the streets, but there was not enough evidence to investigate. This case is still open.
