Any person can gain more Potence by taking vows, but most people are not aware of this. In general, the more focused a person is by following vows, the higher amount of Potence they will gain annually.
Each sect has a list of mandatory vows and optional vows. Each vow has the bonus amount of Potence associated with it listed. All sect members must follow the mandatory vows or split and form their own sect.
Sin
Most vows relate to actions ever commited (ie. never do something). If the vow
is ever broken, that character can still follow the vow, but get no benefit
from it (except they may get to remain in their sect.) A sin can be removed
using the Ceremony spell and by spending Potence equal to the gain listed, but
spent for each instance of the sin. Once a sin is removed, the character will
start gaining Potence for following that vow. Example, Dragos kills a person
accidently, breaking his vow against wrath. After his trial within the sect,
he remains and is given the chance to repent the sin by spending a Potence.
If he took care of the sin before New Year's Day, he would again gain Potence
for following the vow. If Dragos killed 5 people, he would need to spend 5 Potence
to erase the sin.
Vow Format:
Name: +Potence gain (any different cost for sin)
Core Vows
Minor vows are followed by almost all of the Faithful and form some of the
central beliefs of the Faith. Minor vows match the major vows, but are less
stringent. Below are the standard sins and the actions not allowed. Only
the Faithful can get Potence gains by following the Core Vows.
Core Vow package deal: +7+[Spirit]
No Avarice: +1
Other Vows
Faithful: +[Spirit] (Sin: 5)
Short Term Vows
Sequester: Sequester action for a season: +2 (gained each season)
Hermit: Sequester for the prior year (only sequester actions): +[Spirit] (in addition to seasonal amounts)
Not Following Vows
Some members of a faith are not especially pious and do not follow all the
vows of the sect. They do not gain any bonuses for these vows not followed.
They are usually poor magicians because of their limitations.
