8th: Campaigns on Rimigi Island

The Characters: Rinaldo/Vasco (Ken), Cenzo (Scott), Dagmar (Kara), Cosmo (Joe), Dieter (Sam), and Cosimo (Ray).

The Ubermensch Kommando Teutan mercenary company has taken over the Signorelli Fortress on Rimigi. The team's mission is to keep order on the island and make sure taxes are collected. The party's only pay will be taxes collected above the 600 gold required by the Teutans. Cosmo has hired Giordano Sforza, mercenary administrator from Melbin to organize tax collection.

The first thing we do is have Administrator Sforza conduct an economic survey of the island. He determines that under the feudal administration of the Signorellis, that tax collections netted about 1000 gold per month with low to medium taxation. It will take about a month to get organized, but after that we should be able to collect a similar amount. We also need a force of approximately 100 men to collect the taxes.

Some of the party members set out to hunt down the rebel forces hiding in the woods and begin a reign of terror with maximum taxation. In the mean time, the rebels have become suspicious of Cenzo and are holding him under lock and key. Although he denies being associated with the Melbin administration, they suspect he is a spy. Eventually a group of party members led by Cosmo finds the camp where Cenzo is being held. The guards are overcome, but Cenzo remains silent, continuing the ruse that he is not with the Melbin forces. He and one of the gurads are locked up as The rest of the party tracks the rebels. Cenzo and the guard are able to break free of the ropes tying them and escape from the party. They make it back to the main rebel camp where a big meeting is in progress. Many of the rebel leaders want to attack the invaders and drive them from the island. Cenzo convinces them that the Melbin Navy is determined to have a base on the island and will only send more soldiers to kill the populace. He convinces them that the best course of action is to negotiate a truce with the Melbins. The rebels will get some degree of autonomy, reasonable taxation and will be employed by the Melbins to build and maintain the base.

Cenzo and some key reble leaders finally make contact with the party members. They have been busy chasing down and killing rebles. Cenzo argues that killing the populace is not the most economically efficient alternative, since the level of unrest will be high and production low. He recommends negotiating a settlement with the rebels, setting a reasonable tax rate and hiring some of them as tax collectors. The other party members agree and work out a deal with the rebels.

Back in the city of Rimigi, Morelli Lamberti has conveniently procured some crossbows which he offers to sell at a discount. Mona Lamberti has also arranged for 60 low quality mercenaries to come to Rimigi looking for work. The party decides to buy the crossbows on credit and hire the 60 men as mercenaries. Since we do not collect enough taxes in the first two months, the players have to use their savings to pay their support. Dagmar doesn't have enough income and has to send the riot grrlz home since no one is willing to pay their upkeep.

The second month's tax revenues are unexpectedly low and the party starts to get nervous. Some suspect Sforza of skimming or incompetence, but we can't figure out why the net is so low. In an attempt to raise revenue, we put a 10% tax on goods being unloaded at the harbor. Unfortunately, the Lamberti ships refuse to pay the tax and simply sail away, further reducing our revenue. Seeing our error, the harbor tax is lifted and trade restored. Fortunately, in the third month tax collection raises 1200 gold and we are back on sound economic footing. At the end of the six months, the Teutans depart and are replaced with the Melbin Rocketeer Marine Corps. Lord Legumo Nasseri, a Newt military liaison arrives with them to command the island.

Lord Nasseri offers the team a very lucrative contract to stay on in our present capacity. We agree to stay on for a month, and at the end of that time, The Uhrlan Crossed Lightning Band arrives to retake the island. Nasseri is ikn need of all the forces he can get and offers the party a huge sum to stay. We agree and are charged with holding the city of Rimigi. Next Week: The Defense of Rimigi City.
