The Majorca Campaign

Introduction
Players represent the principle members of an extended merchant family living in the city of Avalon on the island of Majorca. Gherardo Lamberti leads the family and is nicknamed Grandfather by everyone on the island for being the oldest human (aged 74). The Lamberti family owns fishing vessels, the slaughterhouse, a warehouse, and is important in the Guild of Majorca.

Majorca Island is a magical place very close to the lands of Fairie. The landscape rises 2000 feet above the sea and is only 30 km from the mainland, which has the core lands of the goblin clans. The seascape is equally interesting with gentle warm waters on the protected leeward side where Avalon is located. The open ocean windward side is wild with colder waters and the island is about 30 km long.

The Guild of Majorca allows all the merchant families of Majorca island to meet and keep dissention to a manageable level. The port of Avalon has about 1000-1200 permanent residents organized into several important families and power structures. The adjacent coastal waters carry trade ships from all the lands of the inland sea.

The four main merchant families of Avalon do not represent the only power on Majorca. Three other important merchant families live on Majorca, two in Twin Harbor and one in Little Harbor. The knights of island, Sir Arezzo of Little Harbor, Sir Salvani of Twin Harbors, and Sir Raggio of Majorca, owe fealty to Baronet Raggio of Majorca, who lives the old Livorno villa in Avalon with his son, Sir Raggio. These nobles lead many soldiers and try to limit the martial power of everyone else on the island but the Imperial Marine garrison, which is generally uninvolved in island affairs and mainly conducts anti-piracy patrols in the surrounding sea.

The magical nature of Majorca is home to the three main magical traditions. The temple to Gavaga on Majorca is the most important pilgrimage site of the Gavaga cult. The Summoning Site is one of the few holy sites to the Faithful (sorcerers) and home of a Benedine monastary. The close connection to Fairie allows the local shaman and mystics to offer tribute to the Oak Demon Queen Lucia and travel in her land.

The New Gold Mine
Around 300 years ago substantial deposits of gold were discovered on the island and after some intial skirmishing, the island and the gold were soon controlled by the Livorno merchant family. The gold provided substantial wealth to the Livorno merchant family. Most of the stone fortifications on the island were built with and to protect this wealth. About 150 years ago the old gold mine ran out and the Livorno family completely relocated to the empire.

Six months ago a wandering mystic, Luigi the Withered, found gold in an old haunted cave. He visited Manuo (the Family's healer) and told him of the gold. After Manuo felt sure that no one else knew, he informed Grandfather who disposed of Luigi and secretly checked the cave. Grandfather could tell that at a minimum a large amount of gold is underground. Grandfather has kept this new mine secret until the family can gain control of the island, for once the secret is out, the gold mine will go to the strongest group on the island.

The Coast
Located on the nearby coast are the core lands of the goblins. The vast resources of these lands are traded only between the various goblin clans, with the small exception of limited trade with nearby lands and the merchants of Majorca.

Most of the Majorca inhabitants fear the goblins, but have confidence in the power and might of the Empire to protect them. The local Imperial marine garrison provides reality to confidence in Imperial power.

The City of Avalon: Random Notes
City Market: open area in the city center with several large trees and a fountain. Bitter holy water flows from the fountain and it provides the blessing of Ugeria (a local spirit) which cures scurvy and related ills. The five meter tall mable Pillar of Livorno used to have large bronze statue of Benicio Livorno the Unifier of Majorca. Livorno family members removed the statue when they departed for the empire.

The neighborhoods are based on ties to various merchant families. Geographically based for mutual support

City dump in disused areas of the city which are accumulations of trash and inhabited by outcasts.
