Description of the Covenant
The Malatesta Covenant occupies the old barracks, canteen, and mess hall of the castle of Baron Alfiolo. The east tower now houses the Baron's troops and the old build complex he granted to his brother the scholar.
The site the Castle is built on used to be a holy site to the augurs of the Etruscan civilization. Divinations here revealed many secrets to the Etruscans and many sacrifices were made to appease the gods and protect the Etruscans. Roman oracles also conducted divinations at the site, but to a much lesser extent, building only a small temple to Mercury. By the time the Visigoths arrived in the area in the early 400s, these Roman oracles and their temple to Mercury was a fraction of its former size. The oracles fled before the gothic mob arrived and never reoccupied the site.
About 850, Sir Nardo built a small fortress and monestary on the site. In 1089, Baron Alfiolo gained control of the area around Gubbio and he decided to dismantle and reconstruct a strong keep on the site. This keep has expanded to two keeps enclosing several buildings.
